ABOUT KYLE

Kyle Aldrich is a writer, filmmaker, and film educator specializing in story development, screenwriting, and producing narrative fiction and non-fiction.

Kyle is the Managing Producer/Director at The University of California Irvine's AntMedia — a production company catered to mentoring UCI students in the realm of video production and post-production through practical application.

Kyle holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College.

Kyle is not a massive fan of writing bios and is fully aware of the pretense that might come with him writing his own in third-person. He likes cats, wandering around in rivers and the woods, the genre of horror, his major arcana card is The Hermit, and he is a staunch believer in the Oxford comma.

Whether you're creating a script for a commercial, short film, or a feature, I've got you covered. I'll work with you to help create outlines, develop treatments, doctor written pages, and plot out stories that will make an impact.

POST-PRODUCTION

I heard you've got some stuff that needs editing and graphics. I can cut the stuff and make the stuff move!

TEACHING

There’s an adage about filmmakers creating not one, but three different films when they make their movie: the one they write, the one they film, and the one they edit. Each stage of this process requires equal parts artistry and craft. In this balance, it is important to draw upon life experience and recognize that we all view the world from a different perspective. No one sees the world quite the same way that you do; that perspective is what makes your stories unique.  Your experiences, your memories, your influences… these all create your view. Recognize these assets; work with them, fight against them. These are your tools for connecting with audiences. Use them.

I teach because I love stories. I love the different ways people see the world. I love being introduced to new viewpoints and seeing something I was not privy to before. I love to learn, and I see something new with every script, with every film. Most importantly, I love helping people find their voice and their perspective and using it to create their art. I teach because I love aiding in environments where people are comfortable expressing their ideas whilst embracing those of others.

In my classroom, we use our “mistakes” and embrace our “failures”. We open dialogues in a setting that is relaxed, yet structured. We approach things through practical application and thoughtful critique. We work. We pick up cameras instead of only reading about them. We write impromptu scenes, engage in table reads, and work through our roadblocks in real time. We break down a variety of mediums shot by shot, line by line, sentence by sentence, discussing themes throughout and artist “voice” and influence. We commit to our work and challenge the status quo after we firmly understand it. We recognize where the ground is before we leap from it, and then we wander through unknown territories.
